Cell Phone & Noise Policy

Barber Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to study as well as welcoming to all users. These guidelines were developed in response to concerns from students about the increased noise in the library due to social conversation and cell phone use.

When you enter the Library, we ask that you turn off your phone ringer. If you must be on call, set the phone to a non-audible signal (such as vibration).

If you need to talk on a phone, move immediately to a "phone zone." There are two phone zones in Barber Library.

  1. By the restrooms on the first floor.
  2. By the restrooms on the second floor.

Phone zones are marked by blue walls and large photographs of red phone booths (see below).

Library users may report inappropriate cell phone use or other disturbance to library staff at the Reference Desk. Library staff may ask anyone to leave the building if (1) they are using a cell phone in a prohibited area or (2) they are disturbing others in any area, including the phone zones.
