Massage Therapy Program Outcomes

The COCC licensed Massage Therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA). The following program outcomes were developed as a result of the standards set by COMTA:

The Certificate of Completion in Massage Therapy will qualify a student to exceed the licensing standards set by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists.

The educational outcomes for the Certificate in Massage Therapy verify that a student will be competent to:

  • Identify the benefits and physiological effects of techniques that manipulate soft tissue.
  • Pathology: Recognize medical conditions in which massage therapy is contraindicated and/or hazardous to the client.
  • Kinesiology: Define the bones and muscles of the body, where they are located and their articulations.
  • Create an accurate treatment plan that incorporates chart notes, reflecting client assessment and reassessment.
  • Demonstrate awareness of appropriate ethics, boundaries, laws, and regulations in accordance with National standards.
  • Describe professional practice standards.

In addition to the Certificate of Completion, the educational objectives for an Associate of Applied Science in Massage Therapy verify that a student will be competent to:

  • Implement a wide variety of specialty skills related to massage therapy.
  • Exhibit characteristics of guidelines for a professional business practice.
  • Conduct client assessment, reassessment, and treatment planning.
  • Describe the benefits and physiological effects of techniques that manipulate soft tissue.
  • Use professional communication skills with clients and peers.
