Why study Humanities?
The Humanities discipline at COCC offers an engaging range of coursework in areas such as literature, creative writing, film, journalism, and cultural studies, helping students explore society and the greater human condition. With a focus on developing insightful and practical skills, Humanities encompasses writing, creative thinking, critical thinking, research fundamentals, and a general emphasis on effective communication through thoughtful analysis.
Students can select from a diverse course list to serve as the basis for an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree emphasizing one of three areas: Humanities, English/Literature, or Liberal Arts/Liberal Studies. Taught by dedicated faculty members, and with many opportunities for applied learning and expanded studies — including through The Broadside newspaper, novel-writing workshops, and Poetry Month activities — students discover an inspiring environment that encourages lifelong interests.
PROGRAMS
"The Humanities classes I have taken have not only helped me improve my writing skills, but have also given me opportunities to grow as a journalist, challenging my thinking and opening my eyes to the intricacies of cultural and communicative differences." — Miina McCown, editor-in-chief of The Broadside, COCC's student newspaper
