Electric Vehicle Expertise

Plugging into Electric and Hybrid Expertise

COCC is leading the way in automotive technology with a curriculum focusing on electric (EV) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV). Through hands-on learning, state-of-the-art equipment, and an impressive fleet of electric and hybrid cars, COCC is preparing students to meet the evolving demands of the automotive industry.

COCC's dedication to electric and hybrid vehicles is evident in its impressive stable of instructional vehicles, which includes a Tesla with full self-driving capabilities, Subarus, Toyotas, Fords, and Hondas. This investment allows students to gain experience with the latest electric-drive technologies and familiarize themselves with factory scan tools.

What sets COCC apart from other automotive programs in Oregon is its all-wheel drive dynamometer, making it the only community college in Oregon with this advanced equipment. This tool enables students to test and analyze vehicle performance under various conditions, providing valuable insights into the intricacies of electric and hybrid systems.

The importance of increasing the number of EV-trained automotive technicians cannot be overstated. With the growing demand for electric vehicles, there is an urgent need for skilled professionals who can maintain and repair these vehicles. The recent $3 million grant awarded to COCC by the National Science Foundation further emphasizes the significance of this initiative.

COCC's Automotive Technology programs not only prepare students for high-demand and high-wage careers but also align with the national shift toward greener transportation solutions. The skills learned in the program can also open doors to careers in alternative robotics and energy companies, where expertise in hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and computer systems is highly sought after.

"Being educated on current technologies in automotive is very important and COCC has always been strong at this. I've even taken a class at COCC to sharpen my skills in a new automotive technology that will soon be the dominant type of vehicle, electric/hybrid."

Gordon Scott, Automotive Technology graduate and instructor

By strongly emphasizing hybrid and electric vehicles, COCC ensures that its students acquire in-depth knowledge and practical skills essential for success in the automotive industry. With a fleet of electric and hybrid cars for hands-on practice, a focus on advanced driver-assistance systems, and an understanding of complex onboard computer systems, COCC graduates are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of technologically advanced vehicles.
