Practicums are a defining component of the Human Services degree and certificate programs

The program's two-year certificate readies graduates to sit for the state's tier-1 Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) exam, a level that allows counselors to facilitate recovery groups. This training incorporates 300 of the required 1,000 hours of on-the-job training for professional certification.

"There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a person's life significantly change from the work they put in on personal recovery. One may show up completely broken, scared, and hopeless, but over time, they become confident, happy, and are able to help others find a new way to live as well." — Olen Grimes, Addiction Studies graduate, peer support specialist/certified recovery mentor at Drishti Bend

Human Services Practicum

With an additional term of schooling — folding in further practicum experience (300 hours) — students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and take Oregon's CADC-II exam, a credential that enables them to supervise others in the field. This ultimately requires 4,000 hours of on-the-job training to test for professional certification.

The Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree, a general degree with a focus on Human Services, is also oriented toward CADC-II capability, but modeled with all the necessary coursework to continue with a bachelor's degree or advanced studies.

If students are unsure, the Addiction Studies program can help map out the best fit. To aid students in evaluating where they want to go with their profession, an early-on project involves interviewing someone already working in the field. This assignment helps students explore everything from work demands and weekly schedule to job intensity and salary.

"Being in this program is one of the greatest personal growth experiences I have had in a life that is devoted to such growth." — Larry Kogovsek, Addiction Studies graduate, board chair of Cascade Peer and Self-Help Center

Each practicum agency is unique in the type and length of treatment provided so students have the ability to get experience at one or more agencies depending on interest and availability.
