Service is tutoring a homeless child.
Learning is taking a class in economics.
Service-learning is tutoring a homeless child while studying economics and then realizing the impact of poverty.

Service-learning combines classroom learning with community service. Students, teachers, and community agencies partner to create a collaborative "education-in-action" experience. The net result? Benefits to students, teachers and the community at large.

Studies show that students involved in service-learning perform better academically and experience higher levels of self-esteem. The long-term gain for all of us is that students are more likely to grow into well-rounded individuals who give back their community.
