Email Phishing Scams

Recently, COCC has seen an increase in phishing scams sent to @cocc.edu email addresses. “Phishing” is an attempt to steal personal information or break into online accounts using deceptive emails, calls for help, offers of money/jobs/free items, ads, or sites that look similar to sites you already use. COCC works closely with Microsoft and our other technology providers to protect your personal information. You can also take steps to protect yourself online:

What can you do to protect yourself from email scams?

• Do not respond to suspicious emails. Instead, forward any potential phishing emails to abuse@cocc.edu. COCC staff will let you know if it is a real email.
• Change your COCC password today to secure your Bobcat Web account and COCC email.
• If you have provided credit card numbers, bank account information, or account usernames or passwords to anyone you did not previously know, we strongly recommend that you contact the non-emergency line for your local county sheriff’s office.
• If you haven’t experienced a financial loss, you can report suspicious emails to Oregon Attorney General’s Office (877) 877-9392 or by filing a consumer complaint online via the Oregon Department of Justice website.
