AH150: Phlebotomy (5 credits)


What Is a Phlebotomist?

Phlebotomists work in hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories, and blood donor centers. Students will be trained to:

  • Perform blood collection to obtain high quality specimens for clinical laboratory analysis. Types of blood collection include:
    • Venipuncture
    • Skin puncture (capillary specimen)
    • Arterial puncture
  • Process blood specimens to ensure appropriate tests are completed
  • Ensure infection control and safety
  • Perform blood draw on patients across the lifespan (infant, children, adult, and geriatric patients)
  • Provide effective and responsive patient care

Upon completion of this program, graduates receive a certification of completion and are eligible to take the National Healthcare Association or National Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certification Exam.

Class Schedule:

  • Course offered each term
  • Term length: approximately 10-11 weeks
  • Classes are held on the Bend campus
  • Fall and Spring sections are typically offered:
    • Two evenings per week or
    • Every Saturday
  • Winter sections are two evenings per week

Requirements to register for the course:

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must have HS diploma or GED
  • There are no academic pre-requisites for the course.

Three Options for Registration

  • Option 1: For degree-seeking students who want to earn college credit, take additional classes at COCC and be financial aid eligible:
    COCC degree-seeking students: This option is for students who plan to take additional classes at COCC, earn college credit, and be financial aid eligible.

    Complete all the COCC admissions steps as a First Time College Student or Transfer Student (If you need assistance with the admissions steps, call 541-383-7500):

    • COCC Application and $25 fee (to pay the $25 application fee over the phone, call 541-383-7500)
    • Activate Account
    • View Bobcat Welcome video
    • Submit transcripts for transfer credit (if applicable)
    • Apply for financial aid (if applicable)
    • Complete Placement Assessment
    • Complete Academic Advising
    • Register for AH 150
  • Option 2: For non-degree seeking students who want to earn college credit for the class but do NOT plan to take additional classes at COCC nor use financial aid:
    Non-degree seeking students at COCC: This option is for students who ONLY plan to take the Phlebotomy course and do not plan to register for other COCC classes at this time. Students will earn college credit for the course.  Non-degree seeking students are NOT eligible for financial aid.

    Complete all the COCC admissions steps as a Non-Degree Seeking Student (If you need assistance with the admissions steps, call 541-383-7500):
    • COCC Application and $25 fee (to pay the $25 application fee over the phone, call 541-383-7500)
    • Activate Account
    • View Bobcat Welcome video
    • Complete Placement Assessment (may submit transcripts for math & writing placement if applicable)
    • Register for AH 150 (see COCC Class Schedule)

    NOTE: If you decide to take additional classes at COCC, we recommend that you switch to "Degree Seeking Student" status to be eligible for financial aid and to obtain academic advising. Call Admission at 541-383-7500 for assistance with switching to Degree Seeking status.
  • Option 3: For non-degree seeking students who do NOT want to earn college credit for the class, do NOT plan to take additional classes at COCC, and do not plan to use financial aid:
    This option is for students who ONLY plan to take the Phlebotomy course and do not plan to register for other COCC classes at this time. Students will NOT earn college credit for the course nor will they be eligible for financial aid. This option allows students to register for the class through COCC's Center for Business, Industry & Professional Development.  This is an option for students who want to pay for the course and avoid completing the COCC admissions process for credit classes.

Tuition*

AH 150 Phlebotomy class tuition: approximately $600 (Assumes in-district tuition) Tuition and fees are estimates and subject to change.

Course fee for supplies: $150

Textbook: approximately $60-80

Certification exam: approximately $105-$120
