Latinx Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, but COCC’s celebration stretches through October due to fall term timing. “It’s a period meant for recognition, education and a time to celebrate Latino, Latina and Latinx identities, culture and history,” said Jacqueline Ruggieri, Latinx program coordinator. The dates of recognition correlate to historical events across Latin American countries. For instance, Sept. 15 is the date that five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — earned independence from Spain in 1821.
