COCC hosts early educators conference, underscores equity
*Updated: Keynote speaker will be Dr. Rosemarie Allen
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is hosting the regional chapter of the Oregon
Association for the Education of Young Children’s (ORAEYC) annual Early Learning Conference
from April 23-24. The conference will be staged virtually with more than 25 live sessions
available, some offered in Spanish. Additional prerecorded sessions are accessible
for viewing beginning April 14. The cost to attend is $150, with discounted rates
set for students. For registration and information, visit earlylearning.co.
Rosemarie Allen, Ph.D., an associate professor in the School of Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver, will deliver the keynote address. Allen has been a leader in the early childhood education field for nearly 40 years, with her work centered on ensuring children have access to high-quality early childhood programs. Her nonprofit organization, the Institute for Racial Equity & Excellence, serves as a lead agency for ensuring equity in educational practices nationwide and she was part of a federal task force under President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative.
According to Amy Howell, Ph.D., conference facilitator and director of COCC’s early childhood education program, the event’s programming is ideal for early learning educators, students, learning specialists, administrators and program directors. Each year it draws hundreds of attendees.
“Supporting and advocating for all children and their families is paramount to the field of early learning,” Howell said. “For educators, this might mean creating new opportunities of advancing equity or perhaps reinforcing established ones, topics that our conference will cover in great detail.”
