A soft pine, this species is widely distributed in the northeastern U.S. at lower elevations. It is identified as a soft pine by having clusters, or fascicles, of 5 needle-like leaves; each fascicle being surrounded at the base by a papery sheath that falls off at maturity. This species is a particularly valuable lumber tree and is used for house framing, interiors, cabinets, and carving.
