This hawthorn is native to the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. and is a popular ornamental tree in gardens and parks throughout North America and Europe. The leaves are 3-lobed with serrate margins and a slight cordate (heart-shaped) base. Watch out for the twigs because they are armed with long, slender thorns, a term referring to these pokey modified stems or branches.
