Abies concolor - White fir

White Fir
Abies concolor
Family: PINACEAE

This high elevation fir is native to the mountainous areas of the southwestern U.S. In the winter, you may find deer foraging on the leaves and buds and Douglas pine squirrels and grouse collecting and storing the seeds from the fir cones. The cones of true firs have deciduous scales and bracts that fall upon maturity, making them difficult to find. Can you spot any intact cones?
