Basic Information

The Indonesian Field Study Program provides students with an immersive international field-study experience focused on conservation, sustainability, biodiversity, and global health. Through a sequence of preparatory, field-based, and reflective courses, students develop research skills while engaging directly with Indonesian culture, communities, and natural environments.

Program Dates

July 6–29, 2027

Students will travel to Indonesia for approximately three weeks of field-based study and research.

The program includes academic preparation before departure, field research and experiential learning in Indonesia, and post-program reflection and communication.

Program Costs

Program Fee: $3,000.00

The program fee covers essential operating and field-study expenses, including:

  • Administrative and operating expenses

  • Transportation within Indonesia, including airport transfers and transportation to and from 

  • Hotel accommodations in Bogor before and after the field-site experience

  • Field housing at Cagar Alam Pangandaran

  • All meals while staying at the field site

Field-site accommodations: Housing at Cagar Alam Pangandaran will be modest and may involve primitive field conditions.

Expenses Not Included

The $3,000.00 program fee does not include:

  • International airfare

  • Passport and Indonesian entry-visa expenses

  • Required or recommended immunizations

  • Health and travel insurance

  • Meals outside of the Cagar Alam Pangandaran field site

  • Special dietary or food items

  • Optional side trips and non-program activities, including sightseeing and shopping

  • Rental-car expenses or other fees associated with non-program activities

  • Course materials, including books and supplies

  • Personal or pocket money

  • Tips and gratuities

  • COCC tuition for PSY 261, PSY 262, and PSY 263

  • Cultural excursion to Central Java, including Prambanan, Borobudur, and Yogyakarta

Tipping is generally not required at most restaurants, hotels, or taxis in Indonesia.

Courses & Academic Credit

The Indonesian Field Study Program consists of prerequisite and post-requisite courses completed across the Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive academic experience that prepares students for international study, supports immersive field research in Indonesia, and guides students through structured reflection and communication of their field experiences.

Spring Term — PSY 261

Indonesian Field Study I

Preparation to Study Abroad | 3 credits

Prepares students for international field research training about conservation, sustainability and biodiversity. Topics include Indonesian culture, history and language. Students will develop and design a conservation related field research project that will be conducted in Indonesia. 

Summer Term — PSY 262

Indonesian Field Study II

Global Health: Field Training and Research | 6 credits

This course is conducted in Indonesia. It provides hands-on field research training and outreach experiences related to international conservation, sustainability and biodiversity. Student projects developed in PSY 261 are conducted.

Fall Term — PSY 263

Indonesian Field Study III

Communicating Indonesian Field Experience | 3 credits

Summarize, reflect and discuss experiences with international field study and field research techniques completed in PSY 262 in Indonesia. Includes formal and informal presentation styles; discusses oral, written and visual formats for scientific communication.
