Digital Course Materials

Digital Course Materials

What are digital course materials?

Digital course materials are learning materials and tools that are available solely in a digital format. These materials include things like digital textbooks (eBooks) and online learning platforms called courseware that provide lessons, quizzes, and other teaching tools (for example, Cengage MindTap and Pearson MyLab).

At COCC, these materials are commonly used to make learning more accessible, interactive, and affordable compared to regular priced print textbooks.

Steps to Access Your Digital Course Materials

  • Check Your Required Materials Before Classes Start
Look up your class in the COCC Bookstore catalog to see which materials are required. Some classes don’t need a textbook, while others may use printed books or digital materials with specific instructions on how to access them.
  • Know Your Class's Purchase Model
Find out whether your class follow one of these models - the Standard Purchase Model, where you buy materials from the bookstore or another retailer; the Inclusive Access Model, where your materials are provided digitally inside Canvas and automatically included in your class fee; or No Required Purchase, meaning your instructor is using free materials such as Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • Learn How to Purchase and Access Your Materials
Select the button for your purchase model on this webpage to see step-by-step instructions. If your class uses an Inclusive Access subscription like Cengage Unlimited, you may not need to buy additional Cengage digital course materials for other classes.

Types of Purchase Models

Each purchase model has a different way of getting and using materials. Check out the options - Standard Purchase, Inclusive Access, or Open Educational Resources to understand how each one works and determine which applies to your situation. Knowing your course requirements and purchase options will help you save money and avoid extra expenses. If you are unsure about which model applies to your class, check the Bookstore catalog before the class starts or ask your instructor.
