Being motivated to succeed and being able to work independently are important traits for online learning environment.
Online learning will require an ability to self-motivate and work independently. If you do not possess these skills, online learning could be challenging for you.
That is great. Being able to self-discipline and manage your time to meet the goals and deadlines is critical skill for successful online learning.
Using tools such as a calendar on your cell phone is a good way to start managing your time to meet the goals and deadlines.
This is very helpful for your successful participation in online classes. Typically, online classes will take more time commitment to complete the course work than traditional in-person classes.
Many students misunderstand that online classes are easier than the in-perspn classes. Since you will not be spending time in a classroom, you are expected to dedicate even more hours to work on the course work.
Great. You may face some challenges in online learning environment. Being able to stay focused on your goal and solve the issues is critical for your success.
Many people chose online classes because of other commitments in your life. Your work, family matters or even technical issues may become obstacles for your learning. If you feel that you would give up easily, an in-person class format may be better fit for you.
That is good. Your skill to read the instructions thoroughly and to communicate with your instructor/peer students in written form will help your success in online learning.
Because the much of information will be presented in written form and you will be required to communicate through email or in Canvas, it is important to develop good reading and writing skills.
Good! In some courses, students will not be able to complete all of the assignments and activities using a mobile device or Chromebook.
Having a computer you can use for course work on regular basis is critical for online learning. Whether it is your own computer, or at work, or a public computer (library, etc.), be sure the computer has the proper operating system installed for online learning. COCC Barber Library also offers free technology lending. Chromebook or any other mobile device may not be sufficient to complete all of the required course work.
Great! Having a reliable high-speed internet access from your computer will make your learning experience much more enjoyable.
Having access to the internet is a critical for online learning whether it is from your home or other locations. COCC Barber Library has some hotspots available for free checkout.
That is good. Many online classes require students to search information on the internet.
Ability to use appropriate internet browser to find the information properly is very important skill to have for online learning. If you are not comfortable yet, we recommend you to take CIS 70: Introduction to Computers class to develop the skill before taking an online class.

Being able to communicate effectively by email is an important skill for your success in online learning.
Using your COCC email account to communicate in online learning environment is one of the vital skills you must have. Our drop-in computer lab attendants are available to help you learn how to use Office 365 accounts on-campus, by phone or by email. (Contact: email@example.com)
Great. You may have used Canvas in the past. Login to your Canvas account and start the Canvas Training for COCC Students training module to further your knowledge. Please be sure to complete the Orientation for Online Classes at COCC that is a prerequisite for you to register for an online class.
That is OK, but most of the online classes at COCC requires students to use Canvas. The Orientation for Online Classes at COCC will help you experience what it is like to take a class in Canvas. Also self-paced student training module, 'Canvas Training for COCC Students' is available once you login to your Canvas account.

You are expected to save all of your assignments and submit them by attaching to Blackboard or email. Without the basic skills of saving a file and finding it on your computer, online learning could be very challenging for you. We recommend you to take CIS 70: Introduction to Computers class to learn the basic file management before taking an online class.
These skills will help you focus on course work.
Some of the online classes require students to download software on your own. There are many “how-to” guides available on the product websites or on the internet that will help you become more comfortable doing on your own.
