World Languages and Cultures

Why study World Languages?

Explore a range of languages and cultures while gaining an expanded sense of global citizenship in the vibrant World Languages discipline at COCC. With introductory and second-year levels of instruction in Chinese, French, Italian, and Spanish to choose from, and a diverse selection of culturally centered studies, World Languages can provide enrichment, kindle career skills, instill a lifelong interest, or serve as the basis of an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree.

"The World Languages program at COCC helped me get a solid foundation of Spanish in a fun, relaxed environment where it was OK to make mistakes and learn from them. One thing I really loved was how the focus of learning was not just on the technical aspects of language but also how people actually use and speak it in daily real life, such as learning about different language varieties and slang words. I think that is really important and makes learning a language not only more enjoyable, but also feel more useful as well." — Zoey Voyles, bachelor’s degree in Spanish, University of Oregon

Supportive instructors with a passion for language help students progress in an engaging learning atmosphere. Resources like a Language Lab with microphone-fitted workstations and opportunities such as a study abroad program, cultural events across campus, and a summer Spanish immersion help encourage students' discovery and success.

"Language classes have helped me think about chemistry and math as languages, too. It's been very helpful." — Beau Montgomery, undergraduate chemistry student at Western Oregon University
