Drug Screen, Criminal Background Check and Immunizations

Drug Screen

All admitted COCC Veterinary Technician Program students will undergo 10-panel drug screens with Verified Credentials. Students with a positive urine drug screen will be disqualified from attending the Veterinary Technician Program.

The 10 panel drug screen will include the following drugs

  • Amphetamines [including methamphetamine]
    • A positive drug screen for stimulants used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder [ADD] may be approved only after verification of need with the applicants Health Care Provider. Your provider must send written verification of need, on clinic letterhead, to the Veterinary Technician Program Director.
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
    • A positive drug screen for benzodiazepines, used in the treatment of seizures or anxiety disorders may be approved only after verification of need with the applicants Health Care Provider. Your provider must be send a written verification of need, on letterhead, to the Veterinary Technician Program Director.
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
    • The COCC Veterinary Technician Program does not recognize Oregon state laws on marijuana use because marijuana is still an illegal under federal law. Therefore, use of medical or recreational marijuana is prohibited while attending the veterinary technician program and clinical practicum sites.
  • Methadone
  • Opiates
    • Students taking opiate medications under the supervision of a health care provider may be allowed to attend classroom lecture, only after verification of need with the applicants Health Care Provider and Pharmacy. Your provider must send written verification of need, on clinic letterhead, to the Veterinary Technician Program Director.
    • Students taking opiate medications under the supervision of a health care provider will not be allowed to participate in the care of animals in clinical or in lab. See attendance policy in the Veterinary Technician Program Student Handbook.
  • Phencyclidine

Criminal Background Check

A history of criminal charges or convictions may prohibit entry into the COCC Veterinary Technician Program. COCC Veterinary Technician Program students will undergo a criminal background check with Verified Credential. Students with crimes on the DHS crimes list will be disqualified from attending the Veterinary Technician Program.

Please Note: Criminal background checks are also required for veterinary technician licensing and renewals. If you have been convicted of a crime, please contact the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board to discuss your crime and see if you would be eligible for licensing after you graduate.
