CAN BE COMPLETED IN AS FEW AS FOUR TERMS

Step 1, Complete Prerequisites

Students are encouraged to choose the prerequisite pathway the best meets their goals  from the following three options. All prerequisite classes must be completed with a "C" or better :

1. A rapid pathway for direct entry into the field. Prerequisites are condensed and focused on the needs of the students seeking CTE coursework. These prerequisites can be completed in Spring or Summer Term.   Students are encouraged to start Spring Term. (Total prerequisite credits 14-18).

  • AH 114 Intro to Pathophysiology (5cr)
  • AH 105 Calculations for Allied Health (3cr)
  • BA 214 Business Communications (3cr)
  • BI 105 Essentials of Human Biology (3cr)
  • CIS 120 Computer Concepts OR Computer Competency Test (0-4)

OR

 2. A pathway with more transferable credits for those pursuing other advanced degrees (Total prerequisite credits 25-29).

  • AH 114 Intro to Pathophysiology (5cr)
  • MTH 105 Math in Society (4cr)
  • WR 121 Academic Composition (4cr)
  • BI 231 & 232 & 232 Anatomy and Physiology I,II &III (12cr)
  • CIS 120 Computer Concepts Or Computer Competency Test (0-4)

OR

  1. A single-course option for students who have completed the COCC Nursing Program prerequisites.
  • AH 114 Intro to Pathophysiology (5cr)

 

Note the following information applies to possible substitutions for MA program prerequisites:

BI 121 + BI122 (Anatomy and Function I &II can be substituted for BI231 +232+233 or BI105)

Math higher than MTH105 can be substituted for MTH 105 or AH 105)

AH 111+AH112+AH113 (Medical  Terminology I &II and Introduction to Study of Disease) can be substituted for AH 114

WR 121 can be substituted for BA 214

MA 110 Intro to Clinical Med Assisting (7cr)

MA 111 Introduction to Professional Medical Assisting (5cr)

MA 150 Pharmacology for Medical Assistants (3cr)

Winter (Total Credits 15)

MA 120  Clinical Medical Assisting II (7cr)

MA 121 Administrative Medical Assisting (5cr)

MA 140 Nutrition, CPR and First Aid for Medical Assistants (3cr)

Spring (Total Credits 12-13)

MA 137 Applic of Prof Med Assisting (4cr)

MA 147 Medical Assisting Practicum (5cr)

*AH 115 Cultural Responsiveness in Allied Health  or PSY 215 Developmental Psychology (3-4 cr)

*AH115 or PSY215 are not prerequisites.  One of these classes must be completed prior to graduation.  Students are encouraged to complete one of these classes prior to entering program classes if time allows.

All prerequisite courses must be passed with a C or higher to register for the Medical Assistant Program classes. Classes starting with the letters MA are considered core program classes.

  • Prerequisite Courses:
    • MTH 95** Intermediate Algebra
    • AH 111 Medical Terminology I
    • AH 112 Medical Terminology II
    • BI 121 Human Anatomy and Function I
    • BI 122 Human Anatomy and Function II 
      • BI 231, BI 232 and BI 233 can be substituted for BI 121 and BI 122
    • CIS 120 Computer Concepts or computer competency test
    • AH 113 Introduction to Study of Disease 
    • WR 121 English Composition
    • SP 218 Interpersonal Communication 
      • Students who have already completed SP 111 and a class meeting the Human Relations requirement may be able to substitute these classes for SP 218. Contact the Program Director for details.
    • CIS 10 Computer Keyboarding [1 credit] (may be taken prior to entry or at any time during the program)

**or MTH 98 or higher. MTH 95 is recommended if students have time to take it.

  • Core Requirements: MA core classes are taken together and sequentially after students have entered the Medical Assistant Program.

*Students who do not earn required CPR/First aid cards during this class will be required to earn these at their own expense prior to the start of practicum.
