Cell Phone & Noise Policy

The Barber Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to study as well as welcoming to all users. These guidelines were developed in response to concerns from students about the increased noise in the library due to social conversation and cell phone use.

  • When you enter the Barber Library, we ask that you turn off your cell phone ringer. If you must be on call and are using a cell phone, please follow the guidelines below:
  • Turn cellular phone ringer off or set to a non-audible signal (flashing light, vibration, etc.) upon entering the building.
  • Use texting, if possible.
If you need to talk, move immediately to a "phone zone."

Phone zones are on the main floor of the Library and are clearly marked with a red phone booth (see image below).

Library users wishing to report inappropriate cell phone use or other disturbance should contact library staff at the reference desk. The library reserves the right to ask anyone to leave the building if he/she is using a cell phone in a prohibited area or disturbing others in any area of the library.
