Library Services for Community Patrons

Barber Library supports the research needs of the broader community, including all Oregon residents. Below are the services we provide.

Free access to Barber Library local collections

Any Oregon resident 16 years of age or older may check out materials from the local circulating collection after acquiring a Community User Library Card. The Library does not issue cards to children younger than 16. Students aged 15 and younger who are currently enrolled in COCC credit courses can check out library items using their student ID cards.

To apply for a Community User Library Card, bring a valid photo ID to the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Barber Library. After filling out an application, you will receive your card by mail.

Below are our circulation policies. For more information about borrowing materials, see Checking Out Library Items.

Group Study Room Keys

Community patrons may use the group study rooms at the Barber Library in Bend. However, current COCC students, faculty, and staff have priority in the use of these rooms.

Interlibrary Loan

For interlibrary loan services, community patrons are referred to the public library. See Deschutes Public Library Interlibrary Loans.

In-house access to online databases

Barber Library subscribes to more than a hundred databases and other electronic resources. Community patrons have access to all of the Library’s research databases from within the building, using the public workstations. Due to licensing restrictions, community patrons do not have off-campus access to the library’s electronic resources.

Community patrons may also be interested in the Libraries of Oregon website, which provides access to research databases for all Oregonians.

Access to library computer workstations including wireless

Community patrons who wish to use the Library's computer workstations may sign up for a 90-day network account. After expiration, the account may be renewed upon request. A valid photo ID is required to create an account. An active network account is necessary to request and renew items through the library catalog.

Alternatively, visitors with their own laptops or mobile devices may use the Open Community wireless network, which does not require a network account. (Note: The Open Community wireless network is available only in certain areas within the building.)
