Creating an Artists Idea in Clay

Phil Newman  - I view my compositions as major statements of my artistic expression in paint and sculpture. I am drawn to works by Modigliani, Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky because of the way they manipulate ancient artifacts and the use of bold geometric shapes in painting and sculpture. I have always been interested in the Medieval Circus, Cirque Du Soleil performers, Renaissance Carnival and Theater. In my current work, all these influences have been combined to illustrate the forms of the figure, as well as bold geometric shapes in my paintings. I deliberately elongate the legs, body, and head dress, and use great detail to depict the costumes that resemble a myriad of cultures.

I research material for inspiration, so that I can expand and experiment with large structures both in painting and sculptures that are spontaneous and stimulating to the eye, and exercise a mood, or emotion that captivates the viewer.   My goal is to utilize my artistic expression as a vehicle for communication in teaching art and scenic design.
