Music of Brazil, Metheny hits High Desert by way of Monmouth
COCC will host musical performances from two visiting Western Oregon University (WOU)
groups beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at the Bend campus’s Coats Campus
Center. The event is free and open to the public.
WOU’s Orquestra Brasil, dedicated to Brazilian sounds, will play a selection of samba, bossa nova and other genres. The school’s Western Hemisphere Orchestra, which plays North American jazz in addition to other popular music repertoires, will perform a selection of songs by composer Pat Metheny.
Both groups are touring Central Oregon for the first time. Orquestra Brasil and the Western Hemisphere Orchestra are comprised of some two dozen graduate and undergraduate students—including winds, strings, rhythm sections and singers. Orquestra Brasil is directed by Cassio Vianna, formerly of Rio de Janeiro. Tom Bergeron directs the Western Hemisphere Orchestra.
