Early educators convene at COCC for regional conference
COCC is hosting the regional chapter of the Oregon Association for the Education of Young Children’s (OAEYC) annual Early Learning Conference, April 27-28, at the college’s Bend campus. The conference runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 27, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. For registration and information, visit earlylearning.co.
Danna Thomas, founder of a movement called Happy Teacher Revolution, will deliver the keynote address from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Pioneer building; this is open to the public for a $10 fee at the door. Thomas, a teacher with the Baltimore City Public School System, will discuss prioritizing self-care as a best practice for teaching students.
The Early Learning Conference typically sees some 200 attendees, according to Amy Howell, Ph.D., COCC’s program director for Early Childhood Education. It draws students, early learning educators, learning specialists, elementary educators, administrators and program directors from across Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. More than 30 educational sessions aimed at early learning development and child wellness are part of the conference, including a number of sessions presented in Spanish.
“This is an opportunity to grow in our own professionalism, with immediate positive consequences for our work with children and families,” said Howell. “It serves as a time to reenergize our own commitment to this work.”
