Good chemistry: Students at COCC bring research into view
The annual chemistry poster session at COCC, where students distill and present the
findings of researchers, is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 1,
at the Bend campus’s Science Center, staged in the first floor lobby. This educational
event is free and open to the public, with snacks and refreshments served.
The general chemistry students will discuss a range of projects, with posters exploring connections between chemistry and everyday life, the environment, medicine and technological advances. A sampling of topics this year: eliminating BPA from wastewater with a simple rugged catalyst; ocean acidification from carbon dioxide absorption is decalcifying coral reefs; and, personal care products (perfumes, conditioners and softeners) comprise the majority of urban aerosol pollution.
“Students enjoy the project because it allows them to dig into the research literature and then translate that information for the people who attend the session,” explained Carol Higginbotham, COCC chemistry professor. “They often choose topics related to their own interests, things they are curious to know more about.”
