Cascade Winds Concert
Sunday, 3/11/2018 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Summit High School auditorium
The winter Cascade Winds concert will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, in the Summit High School auditorium. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted.
Concert highlights include local jazz vocalist, Trish Sewell, performing jazz standards such as Mercer & Mancini’s “Moon River,” “Over the Rainbow” by Harburg & Arlen, and the Gershwin brothers’ “Someone to Watch Over Me.” In addition, Michael Gesme, Cascade Winds conductor, and the members of the band, are pleased to present the world premiere of “Perseverance: A Modern Medieval March,” by Bend composer Chris Redgrave.
Also on the program is a standout contemporary American wind ensemble that includes an overture by Charles Carter, “The Purple Pageant March” by Karl King, and the lightning-fast “Circus Bee March,” by Henry Fillmore. Perhaps the most intriguing work will be the finale: Boris Kozhevnikov's “Symphony No. 3 ‘Slavyanskaya.’” Kozhevnikov (1906-1985) was a prolific composer of music for Soviet bands, but his music was largely unknown in the west. His music was discovered only after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the opening of the Iron Curtain. His “Symphony No. 3” is chockfull of quintessential Russian sounds and memorable folk tunes from the composer’s native city of Novgorod. The highly entertaining and charming music spans the gamut from sweet sentimentality to raucous, edge-of-your-seat musical madness.
