Checking Out and Returning Library Items

Is the physical library currently closed due to COVID-19? For how long?

The Barber Library building will close through the end of Spring 2020. Many library services are still available, as described in answers below.

Is there a way to check out books or DVDs while the library building is closed?

Yes. For spring term, the library will offer "curbside pickup" and scanning services to provide access to most physical materials in the library. The library also offers thousands of eBooks and streaming videos you can access right away (see Accessing Electronic Resources below).

Curbside Pickup

Curbside pickup for books and AV items is available during the days and times listed at the top of this page. To submit your pickup request...

  1. Place a hold request for the item in the Barber Library & Summit Catalog.
  2. You will receive an email at your COCC address when your item is ready for pickup.
  3. When you arrive at the library, call the Circulation Desk at 541.383.7560.
  4. Staff will bring your item(s) to the front doors. Please stand at least six feet away in accordance with social distancing guidelines.

Please note that not all library items are eligible for requesting, including reserves and non-circulating items.

Scanning Services

Library staff may scan a limited number of chapters or sections of books in our general collections. This excludes reserve items for students (see "I need access to my textbook on reserve" under Requesting Library Items, below).

To place your request, email and provide specific details about the book or chapters you need. Staff will digitize the pages and email them to you as a PDF file. The library will not scan entire works.

I am a COCC faculty member. Could the library send books or DVDs to my campus office?

Yes. To place your request, email and provide the information about the book or DVD you need. Note that campus mail delivery happens only every Tuesday and Thursday, which implies related delays.

Alternatively, the library offers "curbside pickup" service during the days and times listed at the top of this page. To place your pickup request, follow the steps under "Is there a way to check out books or DVDs while the library building is closed?" above.

The library databases contain thousands of eBooks and streaming videos that may meet your needs. Email for assistance finding or purchasing electronic titles.

I would like to return my library books. Can I do that even though the building is closed?

Yes, you can return books at any time by using the book drop to the right of the front library doors.

Please note that all returned items will be quarantined for three days before staff process them. You will receive a return receipt within one week. You will not accrue overdue fines during the quarantine period.

Can I return the laptop or camera I borrowed from the library?

The library will accept returns of technology items during the curbside pickup hours listed at the top of this page. When you arrive at the library building, call 541.383.7560. A staff member will come to the front doors to accept your return. Please maintain a social distance of six feet and follow staff instructions.

Due Dates and Fines

I have library items past their due date. Should I come to campus to return them?

During spring term, you do not need to return items to the library. All checkouts originally due after March 15 are now due June 15.

Library items due on or before March 15 will be considered "lost" as of April 15. If you return lost items in June, all charges will be waived.

I received an overdue notice for a library book I have. What do I do about that?

If your book or other library item was due on or before March 15, you might have received an overdue notice. You may try to renew the item using My Account. Any overdue fines accrued in March or April 2020 will be waived. If your item goes to "lost" status thirty days past its due date, you can return the item in June and all lost item charges will be waived.

I am concerned that I may be accruing fines for my overdue library items.

Due to the COVID-19 circumstances, Barber Library will waive overdue fines accrued in March and April 2020.

Fines charged prior to March 2020 will remain unchanged. Replacement costs for lost and damaged items will also remain until the items are returned or replaced. See the Library Fines policy page.

Requesting Library Items

I need access to my textbook on reserve. Can the library scan some chapters or sections from it?

If you are a COCC student who needs access to a book on reserve, please contact your instructor to find out if they wish to place a library request for scanning of a limited portion of your textbook for Blackboard.

If you are a COCC instructor who needs to provide a reasonable portion of a textbook to your students online, please email with specific details about the chapters you need. Staff will digitize the pages and email them to you as a PDF file to post temporarily on your Blackboard course. Due to copyright restrictions, the library will not scan entire works.

During this COVID-19 period, can I request physical items through Summit or Interlibrary Loan?

The Summit service has been suspended until further notice, but you may request Summit titles through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Search the Barber Library & Summit Catalog as usual, but instead of submitting the Summit request form, look for a link that says "Request from another library."

If the book or DVD you need is not in the catalog, search WorldCat. Open the record for the title and look for the dark-blue button labeled "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan."

Accessing Electronic Resources

How can I find eBooks for my class assignments?

To search for eBooks, go to the Barber Library web page and enter a keyword into the main search box. Press Enter or click the magnifying glass icon.

You can click the button "More from the Barber Library & Summit Catalog" within the eBooks box to see more titles.

How can I find electronic articles for my class assignments?

Use the library’s online databases to access full-text articles remotely 24/7.

For articles not available full-text in our databases, you may place your request using related linking within your search results to our Interlibrary Loan services. Library staff will obtain the article from another library and send it to your COCC email address. Note that due to library closures around the country, article delivery may take longer than usual.

How can I access government documents during the closure?

Due to COVID-19 related closures, we are not able to provide in-person access to physical items in our Federal Depository collection at Barber Library. Access to online government documents and information is available through the Government Information resources guide.

Getting Help from the Library

I am a COCC student. How can I get help with my class assignments while the library building is closed?

I am a COCC faculty member. How can I get help with IL instruction and resources for my classes?

Synchronous and asynchronous online information literacy sessions are still available for request!
