2023-27 Library Master Plan
The 2023-27 COCC Library Master Plan contains action projects that align with the goals of the 2023-27 Academic Master Plan (AMP) and COCC Strategic Plan (SP). In an effort to reflect the college’s strategic goals, the Library adopted language to define action projects as outlined in this document. The hope is that this document will be subsequently used for annual reports on the success of related library initiatives.
Action Projects
Student-Ready Campus
COCC Library welcomes all students by addressing their individual information needs and helping them achieve their goals.
Foster inclusive, welcoming library spaces and services
- Develop library collections and services for all campuses that cater to the needs of key programs as well as student population demographics.
- Offer resources that reflect the diversity of students in learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and academic needs.
- Encourage staff development to ensure the library provides an inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Ensure all library credit course material and asynchronous tutorials meet Universal Design for Learning principles and WCAG 2.1 guidelines for digital accessibility requirements to be accessible for a diverse range of learners
Cultivate faculty partnerships and other opportunities to promote the integration of library resources & services into the curriculum
- Offer support for courses and students via the library’s IL program.
- Strengthen faculty awareness of library resources via targeted marketing and actively involving them in the selection of resources that align with the needs of their courses and programs.
- Collaborate with faculty to explore how AI tools can be incorporated into library research. Provide guidance on ethical AI use in research and instruction.
- Provide library and information literacy trainings to faculty via CAFE.
- Build a faculty handbook with detailed information on how to easily integrate information literacy and library-created tutorials into in-person and online classes.
Promote awareness of Library collections and support among students regardless of location
- Integrate with campus-wide initiatives (such as FYE, resource fairs, DEI events and clubs, etc.) to ensure that all students are aware of library support services and collections on all COCC campuses.
- Collaborate and cross-train with other support services, such as Tutoring and the Writing Center, so that students can be referred seamlessly to library support services.
- Regularly assess student and faculty satisfaction with library services and use these findings to refine library services and contribute to ongoing outreach efforts.
- Work with Redmond staff to market library resources in the Redmond Student Commons.
- Maintain currency of browsing and CLERC collections on the Prineville and Madras campuses.
- Build library services and collections to support Allied Health and Early Learning programs based on the Madras Campus.
Provide ADA/UDL compliant access to library resources
- Work with eLearning and Disabilities Services for the adoption of Title II ADA standards and ensure that library resources, whether licensed or created, are accessible by all.
Access
COCC Library expands access by providing students and other patrons with equitable access to services and resources needed to achieve their goals.
Facilitate discovery and equitable access to diverse learning resources.
- Actively build and maintain diverse library collections that reflect different voices, perspectives, and cultures.
- Advocate/facilitate faculty adoption of open and other low-cost alternatives for course materials and use of Reserves services to provide free access to textbooks and other course-related materials.
- Implement discovery tools that make it easier for students to connect to Library resources regardless of where they start their search.
- Implement new user analytics tools to better understand user behavior and potential barriers in our discovery system. Use this data to improve the discovery system.
Provide support for the development of IL skills to prepare students for academic transfer and jobs
- Embed and deliver IL instruction in COCC programs such as ECE, Nursing, etc.
- Provide additional IL workshops on research skills and work with faculty to ensure that students are equipped with the tools and resources they need to conduct research at the undergraduate level.
Provide Library support for LMS integration
- Help faculty integrate library resources into the LMS (Canvas) by developing and providing tutorials, training, and guides.
Provide access to tools and resources that reduce college costs and increase chances for student success
- Continue to maximize library consortial and other network opportunities to ensure that students have free access to a rich collection of both traditional and other digital resources for their learning.
- Advocate for and facilitate student access to technology collections, such as laptops, to help reduce barriers to student success and the impact of cost of education.
Community Engagement
COCC Library engages with the communities we serve.
Work with K-12 local schools to further develop college-going culture
- Deliver IL instruction and research support to our local high school students.
- Participate in COCC outreach that introduces K-12 students to the college world, especially among underrepresented populations.
Maintain and further develop relationships with our local community users and act as a bridge between the college and the broader community.
- Promote lifelong learning and foster the library as a community hub where people can gather for educational, cultural, and social events. This could include hosting community book discussions, art exhibits & artists lectures, author readings, and other programs that engage the college and broader community.
- Continue to build and support CLERC collections on Redmond, Madras and Bend campuses to support early learning and educator communities.
- Maintain/promote the extension of ILL privileges to the broader community.
- Track and assess the impact of community services and programming. Adapt and evolve library services based on community feedback.
Workforce Training
COCC Library aligns with instructional efforts to support the college’s CTE programs and workforce training goals
Support non-credit programs with particular focus on underserved populations
- Embed IL skills in COCC non-credit programs, such as ABS, Deer Ridge, and other programs.
- Build and maintain collections and information resources serving ABS, Deer Ridge and other programs.
Support CTE programs with up-to-date library resources
- Ensure students have the tools they need to succeed in technical, vocational, and workforce training programs including access to industry-specific databases and other library collections.
- Provide up-to-date library resources meeting accreditation standards for CTE programs.
College Sustainability
COCC Library provides free access to high-quality educational resources and promotes an operationally sustainable work and learning environment.
Advocate for and adopt practices to support the college’s institutional goals on sustainability
- Encourage faculty to take advantage of open-access materials and use of digital tools.
- Ensure that digital versions of textbooks, journals, and other research and learning materials are available and actively promoted to faculty and students. Increase free access to course materials via CDL or print editions of texts on Reserves.
- Continue to systematically evaluate library electronic resource, e-journal and e-book subscriptions in light of patron use, cost, and relevancy to the curriculum.
- Develop library collections that support sustainability themes in the curriculum and the overall student educational experiences.
- Maximize use of existing systems, especially via automations, integrations, and collaborative work to make staff work more operationally sustainable.
- Partner with campus services and sustainability initiatives to ensure that the library’s physical spaces meet standards for environmental sustainability. This might include energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction and recycling practices, and eco-friendly furnishings and other purchases.
- Complete the processing and indexing work for the COCC Archives to preserve the history of the college and share its story with interested communities.
