Gratitude and Request
I am Jessica, a Central Oregon Community College student, and am grateful to have just received my first scholarship from the COCC Foundation. Until enrolling, I was working non-stop at unsatisfying, dead-end or low-paying jobs. As a laborer, I was working extremely hard but not moving forward. Whether scrubbing floors or hanging sheetrock, my body ached as much as my heart did.
As a single mom, I could not bear to continue a life of mediocrity. I always loved math and science and knew I possessed the potential to do something meaningful. Thoughts of furthering my education became all consuming. After countless hours spent brainstorming and seeking the advice of friends and family, I finally decided to pursue my dream.
Now, I am a sophomore in the COCC Engineering program with plans to continue on and earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering followed by a Master of Science in Structural Engineering. Then, I plan to study how to reduce the use of unsustainable resources, thereby positively affecting humanity. As a society, we overuse so many things!
This is the best decision of my life, and I am the happiest I have ever been. Now on my chosen path, I am bettering my life and that of my son. It is not easy with all of our bills stacked high, but this COCC Foundation scholarship is alleviating the immense feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that have been difficult to cope with. So, I send you a big thank you for your generosity and kindness. You have enabled me to do my real work and remedied much of my financial hardship.
Today, I ask you to make a gift to support students like me who are working hard for a better future. Any contribution, from $25, $100, $500 or even $4,000, which funds a full scholarship, changes lives. Your gift is a fresh start for Central Oregon students and their families.
With profound gratitude,
