COCC Foundation Scholarship Recipients Give Thanks

Congratulations to our Student Scholarship Recipients, Jennifer and Olivia, who were honored at the 2018 Meal of the Year.

Educational Goal: AAS Health Information Technology

Jen always wanted to work in the health career field, but as a single mother of three, she thought returning to school would be impossible. Despite working three jobs simultaneously, an hour commute to campus each way and raising her family, she set out accomplish her goal.

It was the COCC Foundation scholarship and her determination which made college a reality. “To the donors of the COCC Foundation, I say thank you so much for supporting my dreams. I thank you and my kids thank you. You really do matter and we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Educational Goals: AAS Addiction Studies and Human Services & Bachelor’s Degree Education

Battling a crack cocaine addiction tester Peter to the core, but he beat it, emerging on the other side healthier and ever-determined to assist others in their own personal addiction. He has set out to recertify as a counselor through COCC.

“COCC has ignited a flame in me once again. It is because of you, and your gracious gifts that I am again inspired to be more. Thank you.”

Educational Goals: Nursing

Gwyneth is a well-rounded hardworking student, who was an ROTC student and top athlete in high school, fights fires in the summer and is a student ambassador at COCC. She hopes to one day work with local children as a nurse and perhaps make her way to Africa to provide health assistance to a region in need.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I had the heart to help people. I’d like to thank all the donors for supporting my goals, and all the other students’ dreams and aspirations.”

Educational Goal: AAOT & Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences

The natural world has always spoken to Levi. When he was younger he would search out the scientific names of the plants in his yard in Culver, putting to memory what they could be used for. COCC has helped him grow and sharpened his motivation.

“Receiving a COCC Foundation scholarship is the reason I am even here now. Thank you for the learning opportunity that you provided me and many others… you have given us the means to find our place in this large world.”

Educational Goal: AAOT Early Childhood Education & Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education

Elfreda knew where she wanted to be one day: teaching kids on the Warm Springs Reservation, where she grew up. She has long been an active presence in her community, but getting to where she is now has not been without its hardships.

“I’m so excited from my positive college experiences that COCC has given me which would not have been possible without the without the COCC Foundation scholarship. I would like to express my deep appreciation for your generosity.”

Educational Goal: AAOT Biological Sciences

After graduating from high school in Bend, Makenzie completed a cosmetology program and starting working as a stylist to support herself. She became fascinated by the science behind the all-natural product lines she was using and discovered her passion for plants and science.

“The Foundation scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to visualize a new career and therefore, a new potential for my future. By continuing my education, I will grow personally and intellectually and hope to be a valuable asset to the field of botany. I cannot tell you how amazing the gift of a scholarship is. I am forever grateful.”
