Taking the Next Steps

Once your application is submitted, the Department of Education will begin processing the information within 48 hours. This information is entered into a formula from the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, and the result of this calculation is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is the way your family's ability to pay for college is calculated. The formula for determining eligibility for federal aid programs will be the same for every college.

An electronic copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) will be available to the schools listed on the FAFSA®. If the FAFSA® is submitted electronically, the SAR will be available with in 72 hours from date of submission. If the FAFSA® was mailed, the SAR will be mailed in about 4 - 6 weeks. It is important to review the SAR to make sure all of the information is correct and to provide any necessary corrections or additional missing information.

  • Making FAFSA corrections

There are a couple of options to correct information on your FAFSA®. If you received a paper version of the SAR, write in the corrections or updated on your paper SAR, sign it and mail it to the address provided. Of course, the best option is to make corrections online at studentaid.gov. Most information cannot be updated because it must be accurate as of the day you originally signed your FAFSA®. You will need to speak with the Financial Aid Office at the school you plan to attend if there will be significant changes in your or your parent's income. You may update items such as mailing address, e-mail address and other personal contact information. If you want to make your FAFSA® information available to an additions school after filing the FAFSA®, you may add the school's Federal School Code. No more than 10 schools may be listed on your FAFSA® at one time.

  • Submitting documentation

Schools may ask for you to complete other types of documentation. COCC will mail a 'Requested Documentation' letter notifying you of the documentation needed to complete your file. This letter will also instruct you on how to download them from your Bobcat Web Account. If you do not have internet access, documents are available at Boyle Education Center or any outlining centers. Please return all documentation as soon as possible. The processing of any documents by the Financial Aid Office may take anywhere from 4-6 weeks. After all documentation is received and satisfied, COCC will confirm your expected family contribution.

It is wise to monitor your COCC email account closely and check the status of your aid frequently through your Bobcat Web Account.
