Financial Results." 18 July 2002. Business Wire. <www.findarticles.com> This article discusses the financial standings of eBay for the fiscal year of 2002. They compare the second quarter reports with the initial first quarter reports and provide percentages of increase for comparison. This is written in a very business like manner with a lot of language that relates directly to the financial and business market. This is a great article to get numbers and facts from regarding the growth of eBay, the number of users on eBay and the net and gross income that the site generates on a yearly basis.
Cohen, Adam. The Perfect Store: Inside Ebay . Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 2000. This book is very informational regarding every aspect of eBay from the beginning of online auctions to the current eBay standings. It is a full coverage report on the founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar, and how he promoted on-line community involvement in his primitive computer parts auction site, AuctionWeb. The history of eBay began in 1995 when Pierre began hosting AuctionWeb on his personal website. AuctionWeb continued to grow into the $4 billion dollar auction site eBay as we know it today. Cohen's book is very easy to read and includes all the inside history to the origination of eBay as well as the history of competitors over the years, such as Yahoo!, Amazon, OnSale Exchange and Auction Universe. The book has an easy to use index that directs you to any topic of interest quickly, which is most useful for those doing research.
Goldberg, Teri. "Bidding till you're broke. Online auction sties: addictive or just great shopping?" 3 Feb. 1999. <http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/addictions/netaddiction/articles/zdnet_bidding_broke.htm> This online article from ZDnet.com covers the aspects that eBay has to those with an addictive personality. Goldberg points out signs that most computer addicts have and applies those to online auction addictions. There is information from various psychologist quoted throughout this article backing up Goldberg's statements. He refers to online addiction to it being "like an eating disorder" and covers actual addicts who have recovered from this addiction. This is a brief but interesting article with many links to additional information about treatment of addiction.
Lankford, Kimberly; Popowsky, Matt; "A New Lease On Life." Kiplingers Personal Finance. n.d. EBSCOHost Academic Search Elite, 2003. <http://search.epnet.com/direct.asp> This article reports on the popular collectibles that relate to our everyday life. The authors discuss the impact of the Internet and eBay on the price of collectibles and the availability of items that were once thought to be rare before eBay. They review the popularity of furniture, kitchen wares, guitars, watches, stocks and toys. The authors touch on an important issue of researching before buying what is thought to be a collectible.
Levy, Steven. "How to Play the eBay Game." Newsweek, 17 June 2002: 58. Rpt. EBSCOHost Academic Search Elite, 2003. <http://search.epnet.com/direct.asp> This is an opinionated article written about a personal experience with eBay bidding. This author explores the reality of the bidding wars on eBay and touches on the technological side of "snipers" who use programs to snatch last minute bids. This is a nice, short and to the point article with some basic pointers on the psychological side of the bidding game.

May 11, 2003: 4 –5 This was a great, but short, article about Ralph and Terry Kovel who have successfully turned their love for antiques, which was once a need for cheap furniture, into a fledgling business. The article covers their life story in a very quick and easy to read manner. This article also discusses the effects that eBay has had on the antique collecting market. The author quotes the Kovels' take on eBay's impact of making what was once thought a rare item to it becoming readily available to many which is driving down the cost of collectibles. There are photos of recent auction items that are of “noteworthy interest” such as Elvis Presley’s hair clippings and John Lennon’s guitar strap.
Somerson, Paul. "Become a Zen Master of Ebay." This article focuses on the online services offered by eBay. This article has a list of products that are sold on eBay, prices of the products and the details on these products listed and photos to go with each product discussed. This writer outlines different ways of searching for items on eBay as well as information on how to watch for items and other buyers. Discussion of auction sites outside of eBay is also included in this article as well as information on auction tools for both the seller and the buyer. This is a great article to use for a broad source of beginning information on eBay.
Piszczalski, Martin. "eBay & Autos: A New Model?" n.d. <http://www.autofieldguide.com/columns/martin/0303it.html> This online article covers the new aspect of buying and selling cars on eBay. It is a short and yet informative overview of the effect that eBay has had on the used car sales business. It is a positive article with information on the cost of listing and selling a vehicle, the amount of transactions that have taken place on eBay motors and the incentives that sellers have by selling online versus on a car lot such as a sellers feedback being posted for all to read. He discusses how feedback can effect the sale of a vehicle more than selling a car in person, since your behavior is up for scrutiny. [top of page]
Wood, C. A. Fan, M. and Tan, Y. "An Examination of the Reputation Systems for
Online This is a 38 page research article on the behavior of internet auctions for buyers. The authors extensively cover the aspect of "competitive shilling" (shilling used to make bidders pay more) and "reserve price shilling" (used to avoid paying house fees). They focused their study on the motivation and behavior of bidders who tend to use shilling on a regular basis. The authors used "theoretical insights for modeling and understanding deception and information asymmetry problems in buyer-seller interactions"(p4) as a basis of evaluating online auction behavior. This is a very academic and in depth paper on the psychology behind bidding. Many prior research findings are quoted throughout this paper. This would be a great paper to study for anyone who wishes to delve into the psychological behavior of online bidding.
Sladarnini, Robert and DeRobertis, Eugene. "The Impact of Technology Induced Anonymity on Communications and Ethics: New Challenges for IT Pedagogy". Journal of Information Technology Impact 3.1 (2003): 3-10. < http://www.jiti.com/v3n1/saldarini.pdf> This is a scholarly research paper addressing the "perceived anonymity of on-line interactions" that may lead to "potentials for unethical comportment". This article covers all aspects of online communications such as internet-relay chat (instant messaging), email, and auctions. The purpose of this study was to determine if the anonymity aspect reduces a persons feeling of responsibility that they otherwise do not have in person-to-person transactions. The authors conclude that technology will create a new set of "cultural challenges" and the thieves that were once visible are now "cloaking in the form of cybernetic distancing". They warn users to be "educated and properly trained on the role and impact of technologically induced anonymity" (p9).
