   The problem continues to rise:

- "National unemployment has reached 6% -- a 50% increase since November 2002.  Meanwhile, housing prices have stayed at or near historic highs (Stein 1)."- 

-"The number of homeless appears to be at its highest in at least a decade in a wide range of places across the U.S. (Stein 1)."-

-" If the bill is passed into law, $938 million will be cut from the President's budget for rental vouchers- one of the government's main methods of paying to house the homeless (Stein 3)."-

-"The (Bush) Administration announced in January a 30% cut in operating funds for public housing (Stein 3)." 

-"New York City now harbors 9,000 families, up 40% from last year (USA Today 6)."-

 

 

Who is homeless:

-"African-Americans represent a dramatically disproportionate percentage of homeless: They make up only 12% of the American population but constitute 227 % of the men and women at our missions (USA Today 1)."-

-"Children and teens represent nine percent of the homeless.  Those between 26 and 35 are the largest percent (29%) and nearly 70% of the homeless are local residents.  29% are veterans. (USA Today 2)"-

-According to figures provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services, up to 600,000 men, women, and children are homeless each night in the US.  

-"45% of the urban homeless population are single men.  14% single women. 20-25% of homeless suffer from a mental illness. (National Homeless Organization)."

-According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 1.2 million U.S. children are homeless on any given night and 40% of those children are under five.

 

 

Local Statistics:

- 583 Homeless in Deschutes County (WCOCAAN).

-US Census Bureau, 1999:  379,250 Oregon residents in poverty.  (281,475,000 US total). -
