The problem continues to rise:

Who is homeless:
-"African-Americans represent a dramatically disproportionate percentage of homeless: They make up only 12% of the American population but constitute 227 % of the men and women at our missions (USA Today 1)."-
-"Children and teens represent nine percent of the homeless. Those between 26 and 35 are the largest percent (29%) and nearly 70% of the homeless are local residents. 29% are veterans. (USA Today 2)"-
-According to figures provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services, up to 600,000 men, women, and children are homeless each night in the US.
-"45% of the urban homeless population are single men. 14% single women. 20-25% of homeless suffer from a mental illness. (National Homeless Organization)."
-According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 1.2 million U.S. children are homeless on any given night and 40% of those children are under five.
