Billy's childhood life was a mess. His family was alcoholic and abusive, which contributed greatly to his "failure" and current lifestyle. He got "knocked around" as a kid and left home, alone, as soon as he was old enough to fend for himself. Since then he's lost contact with all his relatives.
Billy Jones is a wanderer. He's a singer without a gig and a musician without a guitar. His mother died when he was only a few years old- the exact year he can't remember- and his father, a professional bull rider, ran away to play the stock market and has died as well-again the date he can not remember. He can't remember how many brothers and sisters he has either and even if he could he has no way of contacting them. Drug use keeps him from remembering much about his past and limits what he can do with himself today. He openly admits to doing too much drugs and points to that as the cause for him being homeless, single and, as he says, "a retard". He survives on the streets by selling music, probably bootlegged, and doing part-time construction work. He admits that if he weren't a drug addict and alcoholic he'd probably be able to get a permanent place to live, but for the time being he pays $22 a day for a "bedbug" hotel in down town Portland. He has no plans for his future.
