Orientation for Online Classes at COCC Frequently Asked Questions

What is the “Orientation for Online Classes at COCC”?

It is a self-paced online mini course that is designed to prepare students for basic skills and knowledge of the online learning environment at COCC.  

Do I need to take the orientation before registering for online courses?

Yes, any student wanting to register to take online credit courses must successfully complete the “Orientation for Online Classes at COCC” mini course.

How do I sign up for the orientation course?

Please fill out the online sign-up form available on COCC website (www.cocc.edu/onlineorientation/)

How long does it take to receive access to the orientation course?

You will receive an email from CyberAdvisor@cocc.edu with course access information within 24 hours after you submit your sign-up sheet. We do not process enrollments over the weekends or on holidays.

How long does it take to complete the orientation?

The time it takes to complete the orientation varies based on an individual student’s ability to complete all of the required assignments. Please expect at least one full day of work if you are familiar with the Blackboard Learning Management System.

How long does it take to receive approval and how will I know that I am approved?

We grade submitted assignments in the order they were received. As soon as we confirm that you have met all the requirements, we will clear your online orientation prerequisite in the registration system and send a confirmation email to your COCC email address.

How will I know if I submitted all the assignments?

Click on the “View Grades” link in the orientation course to view the list of assignments as well as your scores and feedback from the facilitator.

What are the requirements to complete the orientation course?

The orientation course consists of multiple assignments and activities. Each assignment has specific instructions or a rubric you must follow. Just submitting your work does not qualify you to pass the course. If your work does not meet the requirements, we will ask you to redo the assignments.

I have taken this orientation in the past. Do I need to take it each term?

No.  Once you complete the orientation course, you are no longer required to take it again.

Does the orientation course access expire?

No. Once you are enrolled in the course, the access will not expire whether you have completed or have not completed.

What operating system/browser/system requirements will I need?

To ensure you are able to successfully access the orientation course, we recommend you use the most recent version of Firefox or Chrome. If your computer or tablet cannot access the orientation course, you will most likely have difficulty accessing most of online courses COCC offers.

Use the Blackboard Browser Check tool (http://library.uoregon.edu/dc/blackboard/plugin/) provided by the University of Oregon to see if your browser is ready for the orientation course.  

Do I need to be on campus for this orientation course?

No. You are not required to be on campus to complete the course. However, you are welcome to use any of our drop-in computer labs if you need access to a computer/internet.

Can I take the orientation course if I have not been accepted to COCC yet?

No. This orientation course is only offered to currently admitted COCC students.  It is not available to the general public or to Continue Education program students.  If you are in the process of applying to COCC, your Blackboard account will be accessible 1-2 days after the admission process is completed.
