Cultural Learning Communities

COCC's Cultural Learning Communities are designed to provide entering students with a solid academic foundation that helps them achieve their educational goals. Learning Community participants benefit from the integrated instruction between their courses and the sense of community that develops between peers. Research has shown that Cultural Learning Communities can help students achieve higher academic success because of the collaborative approach of their instructors and the cultural focus of their classes.

COCC has two Cultural Learning Communities: Líderes del Futuro: The Latino Cultural Learning Community and Raven Writers: The Native American Cultural Learning Community. These Learning Communities are open to all students, and assignments and learning activities will be designed to provide a specific emphasis on Latino or Native American cultures.

The Cultural Learning Communities combine the following components:

A College Success course is paired with Writing 60 in fall term. This class provides students with in-depth, academic guidance and skills for long-term college success. The activities and assignments of College Success will be linked to the assignments and instruction of the writing course in each learning community. The writing courses will incorporate Mexican American/Latino or Native American authors and culture into course assignments and discussions.

Students develop a sense of interdependence as they work collaboratively together and build a strong, supportive community.
