¡AVANZA! Moving Forward!

Avanza Students at COCC

The goal of ¡AVANZA! is to encourage Latino/a youth to graduate from high school and to pursue higher education, and ultimately, to obtain a rewarding career and contribute to their communities. To reach this goal, the program offers a dynamic curriculum that integrates leadership, college preparation, and culturally relevant themes for the Latino/a students. The learning outcomes include developing leadership, team building, communication, personal responsibility, conflict resolution, and public speaking skills.

The program will also invite and host parents once a month in order to orient them on the importance of supporting their children’s education and college goals.

High school participation and requirements

High school students who are selected to participate in ¡AVANZA! enroll in a college level course that focuses on cultural, leadership and academic development. The class will meet once a week for 50 minutes in their respective campus.

  1. Attend class once a week
  2. Class participation
  3. Complete assignments
  4. Make an oral presentation
  5. Write a Final Reflection Paper

High school students who meet all course requirements receive one college credit and high school credit(s).
