The strawline is used to position the heavier working lines (mainline, skyline, haulback lines) across the logging unit. Note the strawline in the highlead setup diagrammed below. The strawline is stored on the strawdrum, but is often insufficent in length to complete the road changes. In that case, the rigging crew carries out 200-250 ft strawline extensions and lays them out to complete the layout. The strawline and extensions couple together with quick-release couplers which do not require splicing or tools.
