This glossary is based on prior glossaries defining woods words,
cable logging, and forest engineering terms. The mastery of
terminology and jargon is one of the most valuable initial steps that
can be taken by a novice to an area of study. Included here are words
associated with logging, transportation, forest engineering and
silviculture.
This glossary is constructed as an aid to a web-based instruction for an introductory course in harvesting and utilization. As a consequence, some terms may be omitted. Terms have been selected and defined in a manner that is consistent and most commonly used in American forestry. Hyper-text links are included for certain terms.
In this rapidly changing field of technology, this glossary will undoubtedly have to be periodically revised and that is our intent as meanings change and terms are added. The author is interested in comments and suggestions for future revisions. While the definitions found in this glossary build greatly on the publications and references listed, all errors are my responsibility:
