A landing must be located so as to provide access to all logs in the area served by it and it must be large enough to provide safe operating room for all equipment. Landings must be located and arranged to complement the yarding system.
Landings must be located to comply with state safety codes. Consideration must be made for anchors (cable operations), personnel safety zones around equipment, and adequate log and equipment storage spaces.
A continuous strip landing is used in cable operations when the construction of a spot landing is impossible or would create too much earth moving and erosion hazard. In ground based skidding, continuous strip landings are often done in flat terrain where the skidders or forwarders can enter the road from almost any point and the construction of a spot landing would be less efficent.
