The backcut is done after the undercut is layed in. Here the faller has cut in the backcut on an old-growth Douglas-fir in Oregon State. He is driving in a wedge to tile the tree over to complete the tilt to begin the fall of this giant. Below the picture is a schematic to illustrate the entire process.
