Services for Schools
Do middle school and high school teachers need to notify the Barber Library before they bring a class for a visit?
Yes. Please contact Mary Beth Hamilton, Administrative Assistant, at (541) 383-7564 or mbhamilton@cocc.edu.
Do school students have access to the library's computers?
Besides six Express workstations, the Barber Library's computers require a user name and password for access, and most are in constant use by COCC students.
We would like to encourage high school and middle school students and instructors to work with their school libraries and librarians to access to a wide selection of OSLIS (Oregon School Library Information System) databases. OSLIS is provided by the Oregon State Library and offers free access to online article and information databases to middle and high school students.
What type of instructional support does the Barber Library provide to District schools?
While the COCC Barber Library does not provide tours or instructional sessions to groups of middle school or high school students, we will be happy to schedule a preliminary meeting with middle school and high school teachers for 30-60 minutes to prepare instructors for their students' visit.
High school and middle school teachers will be able to meet with a librarian, tour the campus library themselves and review circulation policies. These meetings are not mandatory in advance of class visits but can be helpful in orienting instructors to Barber Library resources.
To arrange an orientation session, please contact Mary Beth Hamilton at (541) 383-7564 or mbhamilton@cocc.edu.
Are school students able to check out books from the Barber Library?
The Barber Library is open to the public at no charge for on-site use of collections. Central Oregon residents 16 years of age or older may check out materials from the circulating collection after they acquire a Library card. A photo id is required to obtain a Library card. The Library does not issue cards to individuals younger than 16 years old unless they are currently enrolled in COCC courses.
High school instructors requiring students to check-out books will want to remind students (16 and older) to bring photo ID with them if they don't already have a Library card.
Instructors planning large class visits may want to obtain Community Card application forms from the Barber Library Circulation Desk and distribute them to students in advance of their visit. Students (16 and older) will still need to bring photo ID with them. Please call the Library Circulation Department at (541) 383-7560 for more information and to obtain the forms.
Is there parking available for school visits?
Public parking is available in the parking lot on the North side of the Library or on the street (College Way). Other campus lots are permit-only parking.
