Here is a tip for sojourners in foreign lands. When you're away from home for a long time, it can help to have pictures of your loved ones. Obviously these loved ones will be reminders for you, but such pictures can be used as ice-breakers as well. Some travelers have set aside page or two at the back of their journals (see "journals" in the Writing classes) and have affixed pictures of their loved-ones, their homes, their pets, their favorite spot in Oregon. Of course, it doesn't only have to be pictures, perhaps a diagram of something you make on your job, a picture a child has drawn, or even an advertisement will say something about you. A personal "scrap-book" page or two can be shown to someone you're just getting to know as a way of conveying a lot about yourself without being limited by a language barrier.
