Introduction:
As this is an U of O class (Bio 390), you will have access to UO library resources, including delivery of ORBIS books and remote access to UO Library databases.  The link http://libweb.uoregon.edu/distanceeducation/ provides more information.

Online Catalogs (locating books):

Start from the COCC Library home page (www.cocc.edu/library), then

Use the COCC Online Catalog to locate books at COCC.

Go to http://janus.uoregon.edu/search~/  to locate books within the U of O book catalog.

Use the Orbis Union Catalog to search other northwest college/university libraries.  

As a UO student you will need to go the COCC Library Circulation Desk to make sure you are in our system.  You can then choose COCC as the institution location when requesting ORBIS books.  Books will be delivered to the COCC Library Circulation desk for you to pick up within approximately 48 hours.

Catalog Search Hints

  • use word search

  • use * to locate endings to words (truncation)

  • use boolean commands (nicotine or smok*) and pregnan*

  • keep searches fairly general

Go to the COCC databases page at http://www.cocc.edu/library/databases.html and click on the "Social Sciences" category, or "List all Databases" to access the following resource:

Used for locating journal articles on academic topics.

Accessing University of Oregon Library Databases (to locate articles):

If you are an enrolled UO student, you have access to an amazing array of UO Library databases to locate articles.  You may need to modify 'preferences' in your web browser, and then use your last name and ID# to access these databases.   Additional information and instructions are available at http://libweb.uoregon.edu/dbs/proxy/.

First, get to UO Library databases by entering the Janus Online Info SystemLook for the section on finding articles and using databases.

Choose your database from the many offered at UO.  As you click on the database, you will be prompted for your name (type in your last name) and your University ID# (type in your social security number with no hyphens.)  An additional Library ID# is required, and that is your social security number once more.
