storation (mid 17th century)through Romantics
(mid 19th century) ENG 102 is offered in a televised, web-supported format. Lectures and discussions will take place in classrooms (the instructor and classroom in Bend are broadcast to classrooms in COCC Centers) with one-way video and two-way audio. Students in COCC Centers will be able to see and hear the Bend classroom and contribute to class discussions using microphones; students in the Bend classroom will be able to hear students in COCC Center classrooms. To facilitate exchanges of handouts and assignments, and to provide a backup in case of temporary loss of the broadcast signal, the course will also have a password protected "virtual" classroom available through the Internet (WebCT for ENG 101 and ENG 102). All handouts and outline versions of PowerPoint presentations will be posted to the Internet classroom; students will be able to access their own grade records; and a Bulletin Board, Private Mail system, and Live Chat will be available. Other Internet supports (such as a glossary to specialized literary terms and links to background materials) will also be provided. Students will be able to send assignments (and received graded assignments back) through Private Mail and work with students from other Centers on the Bulletin Board and Live Chat. Students may contact the instructor through in-person, telephone, email, Private Mail, or live chat conferences (video conferencing may also be an option).
To register for this class, students must be able to attend the televised classes in the Bend classroom or a COCC Center (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.) and have regular and reliable access to a computer with Internet access (note: the televised and Internet components are not "either/or"--you must be able to do both). Computers must have Netscape 4.0 or better or Internet Explorer 3.0 or better and Windows 95 or better (the computers available on the Bend campus and COCC Centers meet these requirements; however, students with access from home or work will have an advantage). Assignments must be sent using a robust word processing system such as Word, WordPerfect, or Works (Notepad or Wordpad is not sufficient). Students must also have basic computer skills (to access course materials and send assignments). Instructions on how to access and use the Internet course will be provided in the first class. (Students may also purchase from the bookstore the Orientation Tape for Latham/WR 121, WR 122, WR 227, ENG 101 and ENG 102.)
