The Spanish Health
Care Interpreter
Training prepares bilingual individuals to serve as Health Care Interpreters in medical settings and meets
the Oregon Health Care interpreter law
standards for entry-level training and education. The course is offered
in partnership between the Oregon Area Health Education Center and Central
Oregon Community College. The training is delivered in a blended format which
includes online instruction, classroom instruction and
clinical practicum.
This training will be
offered at COCC beginning September 21, 2013 and the online/classroom sessions
proceed through February, 2014. Clinical experience schedules will follow
successful completion of the classroom portion of the training. The course fee
is $1675 (includes books/materials) and is due in two payments; one payment of
$975 is due September 18 and the second payment of $700 is due January 30,
2014. (This is a noncredit course and is not eligible for Federal Financial
Aid). There is also a $40 non-refundable application fee.

Please note that your completed application,

participate in an assessment interview.
Criteria for Health Care Interpreter Course Applicants:

Be fluent in English and Spanish; ability to change languages back and forth
easily, and maintain a fast and smooth pace.

Have some experience in interpreting.

Have an interest in becoming a health care interpreter.

Be 19 years of age or older.

Minimum education of a High School Diploma or GED.

Have knowledge of or work experience in/with Spanish speaking populations.
Pre-Entry Oral and Written Assessment for Language Proficiency –
Appointments will be scheduled for Sept. 4, 5, 6, 2014
Prior to being
accepted in the course, applicants will participate in a bilingual oral
interview covering such subjects as reasons for wanting to practice health care interpreting, background, education and
experiences that will contribute to being a successful health care interpreter. Criteria used in evaluating oral
interviews include grammar, appropriate word usage, clarity of speech, pace and
appropriate pronunciation in both languages. In addition to the oral interview,
applicants will complete a written assessment, which includes answering
questions, English to Spanish translation, Spanish to English translation and
reading comprehension assessments.
