Paulina Lake Paleolake Shoreline Study - Newberry Volcano, Oregon
During the course of the summer of 1997, we made several dives in Paulina lake. As a result we have documented the existence of a paleoshoreline at numerous locations ranging in depth from 14-18 m. We have sampled the deposits, together with several interbedded tephra layers, and underlying lava domes and flows. Thin sections have been made of the lavas and paleoshoreline materials and the tephras are being sent out for trace element analysis. Interbedded wood fragments have been extracted from the paleshoreline materials and will be sent out for C-14 age determinations.
Volcanic Hazards at Sierra Negra - Galapagos Archipelago
Sierra Negra volcano is the only active volcano in the Galapagos with a permanent human population. In addition, it is home to numerous exotic and threatened animal and plant species. We have written a geological field trip guide to Sierra Negra for the Geological Society of America Penrose Conference on the Evolution of Ocean Island Volcanoes held in the Galapagos in June 1998.
Geochemistry of the Rift Zone Between Volcans Ecuador and Wolf - Galapagos Archipelago
We recently spent two week on volcan Ecuador collecting geochemical samples of it's east rift zone. Major and trace element analyses have been obtained and we are currently writing up the the results. We will be presenting the results of this study at the Geological Society of America Penrose Conference on the Evolution of Ocean Island Volcanoes to be held in the Galapagos in June 1998.
Geology of Aubrey Butte volcano, Bend Oregon
Awbrey Butte is the site of the Central Oregon Community College campus. Sampling and mapping of Awbrey Butte was begun last summer. Several rock samples were collected, together with field observation of the structural and stratigraphic relationships. Thin sections from several rock samples have been prepared are currently being analyzed. In the near future we hope to obtain geochemical analyses and age determinations for the volcano.
