The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree for Structural Fire Science is used to build technical skills and knowledge necessary for employment in rural fire protection districts, volunteer fire protection agencies and private or public fire departments. The program requires significant on-the-job training (OJT) in participating area fire agencies, where students receive hands on training in fire and emergency medical skills. Current COCC students are affiliated with local fire departments, emergency medical providers and wildland fire agencies.

Whether providing fire suppression, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials response, public education or fire investigation, students are challenged by differing emergencies and circumstances. As a member of a special team, members help people in need, minimize property damage and provide a diverse spectrum of services to the public. Starting salaries in fire service average $2,500 per month with excellent fringe benefits.
