SOC 201 Introduction to Sociology

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Students will exhibit knowledge of the underlying economic, cultural, and political factors that effect or determine the structure of society.
2. Students will demonstrate the ability to discuss sociological theories, concepts, and ideas in large and small groups and to express empirically as well as theoretically-based opinions.
3. Students will examine and evaluate alternative perspectives and opinions while challenging their own assumptions regarding social issues.
4. Students will exhibit knowledge of the primary institutions of family, education, religion, and economic and political structures.
5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of race, class, and gender inequality.
6. Students will analyze the influence of individual values, beliefs, and traditions on the larger society, and will demonstrate an understanding of the multicultural aspects of society.
7. Students will develop and express interpretation and analysis of sociological principles through formal and informal writing.

SOC 212 Race, Class, Ethnicity

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Students will develop knowledge of the interrelationships between social classes, race, gender, and sexual orientation.
2. Students will apply core sociological theories to readings and case studies.
3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of sociological terms and concepts related to the study of social class, race, ethnicity, and gender.
4. Students will examine and evaluate sociologically based perspectives regarding social class, race, ethnicity, and gender.
5. Students will provide analyses of the study of social class, race, ethnicity, and gender through formal writing.
6. Students will express theoretically and empirically based analyses in small groups.

SOC 215 Social Issues and Social Movements

Learning Outcomes: 

1. To acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of social problems and the sociological approach to social problems, including the major concepts and theories.
2. To apply core sociological theories to specific social problems in order to analyze social problems.
3. To understand basic sociological methods and apply them in order to view social problems more objectively and critically.
4. To examine current and potential policies which seek to remedy social problems.

SOC 222 Sociology of Family

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Compare contemporary trends in family life with the past.
2. Provide a historical and cross-cultural analysis of various aspects of family life.
3. Examine the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation on family life.
4. Analyze political viewpoints of marriage and family and the influence of such viewpoints on social policy.
5. Demonstrate an ability to apply sociological theories to a variety of sociological and social issues.
6. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in writing.

SOC 250 Sociology of Popular Culture

Learning Outcomes: 

• To examine and differentiate between the central sociological theories of popular culture.
• To apply sociological theories to selected areas of popular culture.
• To examine the interrelationship between historical processes and cultural values and popular culture.
• To analyze the ways in which popular culture influences personal identities.
