In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Andrea Batista Schlesinger, executive director of the Drum Major Institute, will present “Immigrants and the American Middle Class: Shared Interests, Shared Futures” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Tower Theatre in downtown Bend.
Schlesinger will discuss how immigration policy affects the best interests of America's current and aspiring middle class. Under her leadership, the DMI has released several important policy papers to national audiences on topics including U.S. immigration policy and describes itself as a nonpartisan think tank that is on the leading edge of the public policy debate. It was founded by Harry Wachtel, lawyer and advisor to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1961, and was launched again in 1999 by New York attorney William Wachtel, Harry's son, Martin Luther King III and Ambassador Andrew Young.
Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students and are available at the COCC Information Office (383-7575) and through the Tower Theatre Box Office (www.towertheatre.org). For scholarship ticket availability, call 318-3770.
